Gen Con is excited and honored to announce New York Times Best-Selling Author Robin Hobb as its 2016 Author Guest of Honor. Creator of the acclaimed Farseer trilogy, Hobb has written and sold her work for more than 45 years. As Author Guest of Honor, she will participate in several Writer’s Symposium events at Gen Con 2016, including a book-signing.
“I am very excited to be invited to Gen Con as an Author Guest of Honor,” said Robin Hobb. “I always take great pleasure in the gatherings that combine all our genre arts under one roof. There is not only the opportunity to meet readers and other writers, but to get a larger picture of what is happening in our genre when artists, actors, writers, costumers, and vendors all converge to share the unique creativity of our fields. I expect to make many new friendships as well as renew old ones at Gen Con!”
Gen Con features both an Authors’ Avenue, where attendees can meet dozens of prolific fantasy, science fiction, horror, and other fiction writers, and a Writer’s Symposium, where writers can get tips and techniques from some of the best writers in fiction and gaming.
“We are honored and delighted to have Robin Hobb as our 2016 Author Guest of Honor,” said Jeannette LeGault, Senior Director of Event Programming. “Her extensive experience and accolades made her an ideal choice, and attendees will have a wonderful opportunity to meet her this August.”
Tickets to Author Guest of Honor events will become available when Event Registration opens on May 15.
Writer’s Symposium and Authors’ Avenue in 2016
Are you obsessed with fantasy, sci-fi, horror, and gaming fiction? Want to meet your favorite authors? How about receiving great advice on how to improve your writing and storytelling? Gen Con has two great programs for those interested in the literary world- Authors’ Avenue and the Writer’s Symposium. Authors’ Avenue provides a dedicated space for independent authors and small press publishers within the Exhibit Hall. This year, Authors’ Avenue features more than 40 participants, spanning a wide range of styles and interests. The Gen Con Events team has compiled a list of attending authors and publishers.
Writer’s Symposium is one of Gen Con’s fastest-growing and most popular Gen Con event programs. With more than 80 best-selling authors and experts participating, Writer’s Symposium provides more than 200 hours of programming to hone and craft your writing skills. This year, it also will feature an all-new “Writing For Video Games” track, featuring the lead writers for Destiny, The Division, and more. 2016 special guests include Joshua Blimes (agent), Marco Palmieri (editor), Bill Fawcett (industry), Jody Lynn Nye (author), and Christine Thompson (video games). To see a list of those participating in the programming, you can go to this Writer’s Symposium link. More information on these events will become available in the coming weeks.
Baldman Games’ D&D Events Moving to New Space
Longtime Gen Con event organizer, Baldman Games will move to the Hyatt Regency Indianapolis for the 2016 convention. At the Hyatt, they will have an entire ballroom dedicated to Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying games with a separate area for Dungeons & Dragons eXPerience events. This new space should help control sound, and in general, make for a better gaming experience. Have questions about this move? Please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Challenge Coins Available in Gen Con Store
OffWorld Design’s Official Gen Con store has new merchandise available every week, and this week they have an item concept that’s never been in Gen Con’s store before-challenge coins. Custom-created for this show, you’ll want to secure this limited edition collectible before it sells out.
Industry Insider Requests for Consideration
Each year, Gen Con offers an Industry Insider program that features curated seminars, workshops, and panels about the gaming industry. Are you a member of the game industry and interested in hosting one of these seminars? Submissions are now open for the program. You can apply to participate at this Industry Insider page on gencon.com. The Industry Insider panel will review all applications received by midnight (Eastern) on Monday, April 11, so don’t delay! They will choose applicants as Featured Presenters for the program as space allows.

Late Event Submission
One of the most common questions that Gen Con is receiving is “Can I still submit events, now that the deadline has passed?” The short answer is “yes!”
Gen Con will continue to accept events as long as the Events team has space to accommodate them. If you want to run a game, seminar, workshop, or other activity at Gen Con, submit it at the “Submit Events” page. Sign-in is required to submit an event. The Events team will review late events as they have the opportunity to, and late events may not be included in the first release of event listings in May or included in the Program Book’s Event Charts. Late events will appear in the online Event Registration site as they are approved and will be available for purchase.
2016 Blood Drive Information
The Gen Con team is always impressed with the generosity and love the Gen Con fans share with the Indy community. On top of donating tens of thousands of dollars each year to Gen Con’s Official Charities (this year’s isThe PourHouse), each year Gen Con attendees also donate blood to the Indiana Blood Center. Last year, Gen Con set a new convention record as the show donated 117 units of blood, nearly double the prior year’s total. This year, to keep up with your increased generosity, Gen Con has added a blood mobile on Thursday, will have TWO Blood Mobiles on site on Friday, and will have the regular time slots on Saturday. The bloodmobile will set up on Thursday and Friday just outside the Westin, and on Friday and Saturday in the Main Registration area, at the Maryland Motor Lobby. Walk-ins are welcome and you can find out more information about on-site times and the process of donating blood at the Blood Drive pageon gencon.com.
You can sign-up for your preferred time slot at the Blood Drive web page today. Take part in a giveaway for a Gen Con 2017 promo pass. Thank you to all those that help saves lives in between.
