#of Players: 2 – 4
Age Range: 12+
Overall Construction: The box on this game is solid and has multiple chambers for the cards that come in the game as well as two expansions. More if you wanted to pre-combine the teams.
The cards themselves are good for shuffling once you combine your two factions together. The rulebook is the size of the box, glossy, and easy to read thanks to all of the detailed images of the cards and how to read them. The back page acts as the perfect “quick start”/ refresher for the rules.
Gameplay: In the basic box each player will take 2 factions and shuffle them together. Place out a number of bases equal to the amount of players +1. After each player shuffles their deck, they draw a handful of 5 cards.
On a player’s turn they can, but don’t have to, play a minion and play an action card. As you play the cards, follow any rules on the cards. Check to see if any of the bases can be taken. This is completed by them having more total minion points than the base’s defense. Draw 2 cards and discard if over 10. Keep playing until someone gets 15 Victory points.
Mind you this is just the basics. There are much more in-depth rules, but these are the basics.
Yes/No Recommend: So, I have played this as a 2 player, a 4 player, and a 5 player game. I found it to be best as a 2 player game. I don’t know if this is because I am used to Magic the Gathering or not, but to me it just seemed like the more people we had playing, the longer the game took. I’m sure it doesn’t help that we were all playing pretty cut throat. I like that just because you don’t capture a base, doesn’t mean that you don’t score from it.
There is plenty of strategy available in this game. Eventually, I will get some of the expansions to test out the quality of the game. My favorite pairing is Zombies and Aliens, although Robots and Dinosaurs is cool too.
Where To Get It: This is a relatively popular game and so you can find it in stock at most of the game stores. You may have to go online for some of the expansions. I don’t remember seeing this in a Big Box retailer yet. If you would like to find out more information on Smash Up and its expansions visit their website at http://www.alderac.com/smashup/
