MFG: Blue Orange
#of Players: 2
Age Range: 8+
Overall Construction: This game appears to be mostly hand crafted. The game comes with 8 hard cardboard bases that are nice and sturdy with themed graphics. There is a nice cloth bag to keep the parts in. If you wanted to, after you feel comfortable with the game’s rules and scoring, you could leave the box behind and just carry the bag.
Here is the detail that makes me think the parts were hand crafted. The parts of the totems all appear to be hand crafted wooden pieces. This could be made with 2 dowels, a couple of head dresses, and some paint. The parts in my set are not cut evenly, so they don’t necessarily sit straight. That is not saying that there is anything wrong with them, as this sort of abnormality should be expected from pieces made out of wood.
The book is a nice sized glossy book. It has the rules in 8 different languages. Although, the scoring portion of the rules is a little unclear, the pictures that explain the scores on the other hand are how I figured out how to score it.
Gameplay: Kind of simple game play each player picks a set of head dresses, then you lay out 6 of the game board pieces. 3 of them vertical & 3 of them horizontal. With all of that set up, it’s time to start playing.
Each player in turn will draw a piece out of the bag. Then they must decide if they will put that piece on a totem or put a head dress on a totem & then turn a new card. Do this until each player has 3 totems.
The hardest part of this game is the scoring. Pay close attention to how the scoring is figured in the pictured examples. It is the only way I figured it out.
Yes/No Recommend: This can be a very quick game and requires a good deal of strategy. Don’t plan on truly understanding the game or enjoying it until you have figured out how you score the game. Once you get scoring down the game is so much smoother and you understand how to manipulate the totems to get the most points. When we figured out the scoring which was easy to do once we looked at the rulebook and saw the breakdown of how it was scored in several examples.
Where to Get It: This is a fairly new game that I haven’t seen at the stores yet, but I’m sure they’ll order it for you if you ask nicely. As usual, I have not seen this at any Big Box yet. For more info on this and any other Blue Orange game please visit their website at…
