MFG: Looney Labs
#of Players: 2 – 5
Age Range: 8 +
Overall Construction: Standard for Looney Labs the cards in this game are of high quality. The box on this game seem to be better than previous ones. The reason I say this is because it seems to have a tighter seal than I’ve seen previously on their games. You will also get a rules sheet and an advertisement page. My favorite part of the construction is the artwork on the cards. It truly funny to see a card modeled after the man himself, Andy Looney, his family, & some characters from movies.
Gameplay: This is simple to play. Each player starts with 3 ingredients. There are 3 guests that appear. Each Guest has a favorite dessert and a series of ingredients that they do or do not like. On a players turn, they draw one card. From there they can do one of 3 things. Satisfy 1 or 2 guests – you do this by giving them their favorite meal or make a meal using the ingredients that they like. You can Go back to the Kitchen – which means you get to draw another card. Lastly, you can dump your tray – which is discarding cards & drawing replacements.
Each Guest has a different suit which can be found in the left side of the guest card. If you match the suit symbol when satisfying the guest, you get to draw an ingredient. If they are served their favorite dessert then they also draw an extra ingredient. If they are served both, the favorite meal & an item with their suit symbol, they get 2 ingredients. You can use as many ingredients as necessary to complete a dessert for your guest.
Play continues until a player has either 3 guests of the same suit or 5 guests of different suits. There are 3 extra sets of rules that can be a joy to play after you’ve mastered the main game. A clever tactic that I used while playing, was to serve guests that I saw might complete other players sets. It comes in handy even if it doesn’t help me.
Yes/No Recommend: Just as I would with almost every Looney Labs product, I highly recommend this game. It is simple enough that my mom was able to get it after only 2 rounds. Like I said before, the artwork is fun to look at & the game is fun to play. I plan on trying to go beyond the recommended number of players. Once you learn the main rules, I found the Poaching & Blocking & the Opening A Buffet optional rules are very fun to play.
I will warn you, that you have to be careful how you use your ingredients. You don’t want to use your ingredients too soon, because the next guest card that comes into play may have a favorite dessert that you just used, along with other cards to get another guest.
Where To Get It: There are certain companies that I don’t wait for review copies of games from. My copy of Just Desserts came from my local Comics & Games shop, Rockin’ Rooster. So check your local Comics/Games/Hobby shops first. This game is also available online.
